Historical Note:

Each year on April 6, Scottish Americans celebrate Tartan Day, a festival that recalls the signing of the Declaration of Arbroath in 1320, a treaty that officially granted the Scots sovereignty over their lands and released them from English rule. In the United States, the first celebrations of Tartan Day began at a local level, with community groups and church organizations organizing small festivals and celebrations beginning in the 1990s. Over the course of the next few years, many states began to observe Tartan Day as well. A national recognition of Tartan Day did not come until March 20, 1998 when the federal government passed Resolution 155, which declared every April 6 as Tartan Day.

Scottish Americans have played an important role in American history. The Declaration of Arbroath was an influence on the American Declaration of Independence. As the Scots immigrated to America, they brought with them their religious beliefs and their favorite past times, such as curling and golf. Scottish Americans have also been integral in the creation of many colleges and universities. Some famous Scottish Americans include Alexander Hamilton, Patrick Henry, Washington Irving, and Theodore Roosevelt.

Scope and Content Note:

This collection contains a proclamation written by Governor Frank O�Bannon in which he declared the date April 6, 2001 as Tartan Day throughout the state of Indiana. This proclamation was created in order to honor Scottish Americans for their contributions to the state and country, as well as to observe the anniversary of the signing of the Arbroath, the Scottish Declaration of Independence, signed on April 6, 1320.
