Biographical Note:

Samuel Moffett Ralston was born on December 1, 1857, near New Cumberland, Ohio. His parents were John and Sarah Scott Ralston. In 1865, his family moved to Owen County, Indiana, where they established a large farm. They moved several more times, finally settling in Spencer, Indiana. Ralston was a schoolteacher before he began studying law in 1884. He was admitted to the bar in 1886 and set up a practice in Lebanon, Indiana, where he continued until his election as Governor of Indiana in 1912. Ralston married Mary Josephine Backus on December 25, 1881, but Mary died only six months later. In 1889, he remarried to Jennie Cravens with whom he had three children. Ralston died on October 14, 1925.
