Biographical Note:

Amos Lane was born on March 1, 1778, near Aurora, New York. He moved to Lawrenceburg, Indiana, and then to Burlington, Kentucky, for a time before settling again in Lawrenceburg in 1814. Lane began practicing law in Lawrenceburg in 1808 and was admitted to the bar in 1811. From 1815 to 1823, he was the prosecuting attorney for Dearborn County. He was elected to the first Indiana House of Representative in 1816. He was reelected in 1817 and became Speaker of the House. Lane also served in the Indiana House from 1821 to 1822. Lane lost bids to become Lieutenant Governor of Indiana in 1816 and 1831. In 1826, he was prosecuting attorney of the 3rd Circuit Court. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives on the Jacksonian ticket and served from 1833 to 1837. He then returned to his law practice and served another term as Speaker of the Indiana House in the 1839-1840 session. He died on September 2, 1849, in Lawrenceburg, Indiana.

The collection contains a letter written by Amos Lane to David Reese, a lawyer in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, notifying him that the bank bill they had desired passed. The bill was written by Amos Lane.
