Biographical Note:

Alvin Peterson Hovey was born on September 6, 1821, near Mount Vernon, Posey County, Indiana. He began practicing law after being admitted to the bar in 1842. He was commissioned as a first lieutenant in 1846 to serve in the Mexican War. In 1850, he was a delegate to the Indiana Constitutional Convention. Hovey served as a circuit judge (1851-1854); Indiana Supreme Court justice (1854); and U.S. district attorney (1856-1858).

When the Civil War began, he was commissioned by Governor Morton as colonel of the 24th Regiment, Indiana Volunteers. He served throughout the war, receiving promotions to brigadier general of Volunteers and brevetted major general of Volunteers. Following the war, he became U.S. Minister to Peru and held that post until his resignation in 1870. He returned to Indianapolis to resume his law practice. Hovey served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1887 to 1889. He resigned from Congress after being elected Governor of Indiana. He died in office on November 23, 1891, in Indianapolis.

Scope and Content Note:

The collection contains a letter written by Alvin P. Hovey to Isabelle de la Hunt in response to a kind letter she sent him while he was in the U.S. House of Representatives. Hovey was a friend of her son.
