Highlights

  • There were 750,288 total discharges from hospitals in 1996. Sixteen percent of the patients were 70-79 years of age (n=117,746), 13 percent were less than one year of age (n=95,793), 12 percent were 60-69 years of age (n=92,752), and 12 percent were 80 years of age or older (n=90,398).
  • There were a total of 3,729,254 days spent in the hospital, for total charges of $6,197,284,460.
  • The five most frequent APR-DRGs were normal newborn (n=70,203), vaginal delivery (n=53,139), psychoses (n=23,171), simple pneumonia and pleurisy (n=22,387), and heart failure and shock (n=21,656).
  • There were 896 procedures that were performed more than 20 times in 1996. There were 419,032 discharges from these procedures.
  • Based on the number of reported discharges in 1996, the five most frequent procedures were circumcision (n=32,733), episiotomy (n=20,877), low cervical cesarean section (n=16,105), other manually assisted delivery (n=13,615), and left heart cardiac catheterization (n=12,840).
  • For the 50 most frequent procedures, continuous mechanical ventilation for 96 consecutive hours or more had the highest average length of stay (21.40 days), while repair of other current obstetric laceration had the lowest average length of stay (1.56 days). The APR-DRG with the highest average total charges was aortocoronary bypass of three coronary arteries ($40,086).
  • Among procedures performed because of heart disease, bypass of three coronary arteries was most frequent (n=2,643) followed by bypass of four or more coronary arteries (n=2,060) and then, bypass of two (n=1,921).
  • Among procedures highlighted in the Childbirth section, instrumental or manually assisted delivery was most frequent (n=20,039) followed by delivery of an infant by cesarean section using a low approach (n=16,105).
  • There were 3,425 discharges for total hip replacement procedures, with an average length of stay of 4.90 days and an average total charge of $18,155. There were 2,344 discharges for partial hip replacement procedures with an average length of stay of 6.53 days and an average total charge of $15,210.
  • There were 6,341 discharges for total knee replacement procedures, with an average length of stay of 4.64 days and an average total charge of $18,329.
  • There were 3,406 discharges from appendectomy procedures, with an average length of stay of 3.49 days and an average total charge of $7,586.
  • Total abdominal hysterectomy procedures accounted for 9,563 discharges. The average length of stay was 3.13 days with an average total charge of $7,339.
