Cholera is a waterborne illness caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. Illness occurs when contaminated water or improperly cooked food, especially seafood, is ingested. This occurs more often in underdeveloped countries where water supplies and proper sewage disposal are inadequate. V. cholerae produces a toxin which is responsible for the distinctive watery diarrhea. Other symptoms of cholera may include vomiting, leg cramps, and shock.
There were no reported cases of cholera during the five-year period 2000-2004 in Indiana.
