On Saturday, May 31st the Vigo Co. SWCD partnered with the Vigo County Parks Department for a "hands on rain garden workshop" at Fowler Park in Vigo County.
The site was chosen for a couple of different reasons: to help control storm water runoff from the parking area and to add beauty to the landscape.
All test were performed at the site: determining the soils types, the infiltration rate, soil compaction of the site, calculating the drainage area, calculating the depth of the rain garden and figuring out if additional amendments were needed to the soil.
The SWCD staff had a short presentation to the 13 people in attendance on what is a rain garden and how to install a rain garden.
After the presentation, everyone pitched in to help plant 784 plugs into the 746 square foot rain garden.
Types of native flowers used were:
Yellow Fox Sedge, Prairie Dropseed, New England Aster, Blue False Indigo, Purple Coneflower, Blue Mist Flower, Blue Flag Iris, Dense Blazing Star, Smooth Beard tongue, Foxglove Beard tongue, Mountain Mint, Showy Black Eyed Susan, Riddell's Golden Rod, and Golden Ragwort
