Each year the Vermillion County SWCD partners with other organizations to help promote conservation. Each year, the Duke Energy Cayuga Generating Station along with Purdue Extension - Vermillion County hosts the Wonders of the Wetlands for middle school students in Vermillion and Parke Counties. Students learn about several different areas of conservation and wildlife habitat as they travel from station to station in the Duke Energy Wetlands Area. Parke and Vermillion SWCD’s discussed water movement on agricultural fields and how cover crops conserve water and keep sediment out of our rivers and streams.

Our SWCD also helps with the Vigo County SWCD Ag Days for area 5th graders. This three day event hosts nearly 1000 students from Vigo County. Vermillion County SWCD discussed Ag Products and how they are processed.

Outreach to the schools is also a major component in our programming. Discussing water quality, soil health and natural resource conservation gives area teachers an outside resource for classroom presentations. Assisting with science fair and 4-H projects and topics is also a service our office provides.
