The Pulaski County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) is a government subdivision of the state and a public body exercising public powers.
The mission of the Pulaski County SWCD is to conserve, improve, and sustain the appropriate use of our natural resources. Critical issues in Pulaski County are wind and water erosion, protecting water quality and quantity - surface and sub-surface, maintaining adequate and safe drainage, promoting wise land use, and developing and promoting reasonable wildlife management.
2012 saw thirteen different adult educational offered by the Pulaski County SWCD. These included workshops on cover crops by Hans Kok of Conservation Cropping Systems Initiative, workshops on water quality followed by water testing the Tippecanoe River, and a program that included an analysis of the 2012 growing year by Bob Nielsen from Purdue University.
2012 also saw the Pulaski County SWCD offer a Cover Crop Cost-Share Program to area growers. Twenty-one Pulaski County farmers received $6,675 from Clean Water Indiana funds and $8,485 from our district funds for a cost-share total of $15,160. These farmers planted a total of 1,516 acres of cover crops with the $10 per acre cost share. Over 2,929 acres of total cover crops were actually planted by the same growers as many saw the benefits of soil stabilization, increased soil health, and increased organic matter from this practice.
