The Mission of the Posey County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) is to provide leadership and assistance in the proper use and management of soil, water and related natural resources in Posey County.
The District is part of the Southwest Indiana Cover Crop Program. This program includes the surrounding counties of Gibson, Pike, Vanderburgh and Warrick counties. Our five counties have joined forces in promoting the importance of soil health through cover crops. We have applied for, and received, several multiple-county Clean Water Indiana grants to help fund cost-share programs for cover crops, offer educational field days and workshops, etc.
We have hosted multiple field events and advertise in each other's newsletters to get our message out. Each county has their own cover crop cost share program guidelines within the limits of the grant. Fortunately, the Posey County Board of Supervisors elected to add District funds to the grant funds in order to promote more cover crop acres. This is working out well and we have new producers and landowners each year participate in our program.
Our group applied for and was selected as a District Showcase winner for our program in 2011! The first year of our adventure, more than 1,000 acres were planted in cover crops, with approximately 400 of those acres receiving cost share. The success of this first year convinced our group of the interest in cover crops and we have applied for additional grants since. Our Districts continue to add funds to the available cost share funds as well.
