The Jackson County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) had the opportunity to give land users that "extra push" to use cover crops. In 2011, the District received Clean Water Indiana grant dollars for the fourth year in a row. This money was received from the State Soil Conservation Board of the Indiana State Department of Agriculture.
Funds from these grants were used to promote winter cover crops in Jackson County allocated by the year-end. The District would pay up to $20 per acre and each land user was allocated up to 20 acres. These cover crops were to be seeded according to the USDA NRCS winter cover crop standards.
The Jackson County SWCD allocated $5,500 towards the cover crops as in-kind match in the way of reduced equipment rental.
