The Huntington County Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD), along with several other conservation partners, have provided cost-share opportunities for landowners and/or producers in Huntington County over the past year.  These added conservation practices help our environment by reducing erosion of our soil and the amount of nutrients entering our rivers and streams.  The District and partners continue to work diligently to promote and encourage the implementation of conservation practices to

319 Grant – This past year the Watershed Management Plan and the Cost Share Program Plan for the Lower Salamonie River Watershed (LSRW) were completed and approved by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).  Through our cost share program, we had 47 applications submitted for seeding cover crops in the Tier 1 and Tier 2 critical areas in the watershed.  Forty-four of those projects were completed and a total of 2,948.4 acres were seeded with cover crops.  The total cost share funds allocated for these projects were $76,786.33.

The LSRW group hosted an “On-Site Sewage System Workshop” in which guest speakers provided information about on-site sewage systems, system failures and the importance of proper maintenance and care of your on-site sewage system.

During the final year of our grant, we will continue to conduct water sampling events to monitor levels of contaminants entering our rivers and streams, work with landowners on implementing conservation practices on their farms and hosting a cover crop field day later this summer.
