Hendricks County has been holding Women’s Learning Circles for past couple years to reach out to women land owners and help them with conservation planning and practices on their farms. The last women’s learning circle that was held in the county was very impactful for one farmer. She at the time had an operator working her farm that had done 8+ years of continuous soybeans and conventional tillage, which left her farm ground bare and eroded due to the 4-6% slopes throughout the tract. She was very concerned about the health of her soil and crops and asked for help on what to do to keep her yields high. The other women in the group along with facilitators helped her to get ideas on how to approach her operator and do what was best for her farm. She currently has a new operator who will be implementing no-till, cover crops and crop rotation to help prevent erosion and build her soil back up. He also has been working to get fence lines back into shape and is looking into correcting the gullies with waterways. It really was great to see everyone pull together to help her decide what was best for her and her farm and the best way to accomplish it. We are looking forward to more women’s learning circle events to learn from each other and keep making a difference in the community.
