In 2012 Gibson County SWCD was partenering with other Soil and Water Conservation Districts in the Southwest, partners have the Ohio River on the South and the Wabash River to the East.
Gibson and Pike County SWCDs continue to share a part time technician with funds from the CWI grant. The grant for a technician has been very successful and has assisted ISDA, NRCS, and both districts in getting conservation on the ground. The technician has also assisted with the CRP waterway reviews subcontracted by Knox County. This grant has benefited more than just Pike and Gibson Countys.
Dubois County SWCD is also the lead county on a grant with Gibson, Orange, Pike, Spencer and Crawford SWCDs. This grant offers a cost share for planting cover crops. It also includes demonstration areas to be set up at the Jasper Campus of Vincennes University, education on rain barrels and rain gardens. Gibson County SWCD has been successful cost sharing with landowners of reclaimed mine ground and plans to use all their cost-share funds during 2013.
Knox County SWCD is the lead on a CWI grant with Gibson, Greene, Daviess, Pike, Dubois and Warrick. This grant gives special consideration to the 230,951 acres of bond-released reclaimed mine land in the project area. This grant is going very well and Gibson SWCD anticipates they will have all their money wisely spent by the end of 2013.
Gibson has assisted with several adult education events in surrounding counties and continues to plan and work with other counties in Southwest Indiana to improve our water quality.
