Pond Seminar

On the afternoon of September 13, the Decatur County SWCD hosted a pond seminar at the residence of Bob & Michelle Veerkamp.  Approximately 45 people attended the event on a picture perfect late summer day.

David Neuman, Area Plan Director, discussed the permitting process and regulations required by the county.  Roger Wenning of Wenning Excavating explained the process of planning and pond construction.  Roger stressed the importance of first establishing what you want as the primary use for your pond and picking a good location.  Kenny Marshall of NRCS was also available to answer technical questions about pond construction.  John Dwiggins Jr., Nuisance Animal Specialist, talked about how to deal with unwanted pond guests.  Our final speaker was Joey Leach, biologist with Aquatic Control, based out of Seymour, IN.  Joey provided information on pond aeration, weed control through chemical and organic methods, and fish stocking recommendations. At the conclusion our guests were provided with meal provided by Aquatic Control.
