In an effort to reduce nonpoint source pollution Clay County SWCD offered a cost-share incentive program where landusers had the option of choosing to have their cover crops seeded with a plane or installing field borders. Both BMP's (Best Management Practices) are created to keep sediment and nutrients out of our water. Landusers who chose to install and maintain field borders for 10 years received a one time payment. Those who chose cover crops got their aerial seeding paid for. The CCSWCD matched $4500 to the CWI $4500, thus putting twice as much conservation on the ground. Results of this project were: Cover Crop Program: # of participants-5 Total acres covered: 421.69 acres Field Border Program: # of participants-3 Total acres covered: 7.66 acres Clay County Soil and Water Conservation District felt this program gave them the best opportunity in attaining their business goals as well as focusing on national priorities.
