Since Healthy soils and clean water are the foundation of a healthy life in our world, the Boone County Soil & Water Conservation District is announcing their new Rain Simulator that is available, FREE of charge, to all schools, scout troops and any other youth organizations and events.
The purpose of this display is to illustrate how rain can erode our precious top soil under different circumstances and ground cover conditions or lack there of. Some other topics that can be covered are "How the water infiltrates the soil to re-charge the ground water and storm water run-off that can carry pollutants into our streams and ponds." With adequate notice, the displays can be modified to fit several types of situations that you might need to emphasize to your class or group.
We also have a table top model called the "Enviroscape" that can be used in the classroom. This model illustrates how storm water run-off can be affected by pollutants in a more urban setting and processes that have to be taken by the waste water treatment plant to clean the water. This model works great for smaller groups.
