Elected Officials Elected Officials

As an elected official, you must balance many needs. You are charged with protecting the public. You are charged with providing your police, firefighters, emergency personnel and other first responders with the tools they need to do their jobs. And, you have to do it all on a budget.

Budget notwithstanding, in the event of a catastrophic event or natural disaster, public officials must be ready to respond immediately. If response efforts are successful, the public will judge their elected officials favorably. If emergency response is less than expected, the public will be quick to assign blame.

Project Hoosier SAFE-T and interoperable communications can help improve emergency response when time is measured in lives, not seconds. And because the project is constructing the backbone of a statewide system, costly duplication is avoided, thus saving local taxpayers significant amounts of money. It's good financial policy and good public safety policy.

Even though the issue is not as visible as road repairs or capital building projects, interoperable communications is vital to preserve and protect the general public and first responders. And as an elected official, you are in a unique position to offer your constituents an example of cooperation, savings and significant advances in public protection.
