Anushree Bag named one of GovTech's Top 25 honorees

Anu

Anushree Bag has been named one of only 25 honorees in GovTech’s Top 25 Doers, Dreamers and Drivers of 2022.

These individuals were chosen as those who work behind the scenes to keep the public sector running, embodying what it means to be doing the people’s business where technology is constantly changing.

An electrical engineer by education, Anushree Bag is the Executive Director of Risk and Compliance for the Indiana Office of Technology.

At the state, her team has completed a cybersecurity risk assessment for all local health departments, and Bag also oversees a compliance center of excellence, working with various state agencies to ensure their processes observe all relevant regulations. Another major facet of her work is business continuity and recovery, helping agencies craft plans to ensure the stability of critical applications in the event of an emergency.

Along with government work, she also has a long list of leadership roles on her resume, including creating a professional group for women in technology (Government Women in Technology) in March 2020, which has grown to nearly 150 women from many state agencies who meet each month to talk about both challenges and opportunities they see and have seen throughout their careers.

“It is an absolute honor to receive this award, but the bigger honor has been the opportunity to be involved in public service and be part of something that is so much bigger than myself,” Bag said. “I remain grateful to the ecosystem that not only empowers me to push past my comfort-zone to dream bigger, aim higher, take on things that have not been done before, but also supports and recognizes my efforts.”

CIO Tracy Barnes, State Earn & Learn program win 2022 StateScoop 50 awards

Indiana Office of Technology Tracy Barnes and IOT’s State Earn and Learn (SEAL) program have been announced as winners for the 2022 StateScoop 50 Awards, honoring the best and the brightest who make state government more efficient and effective.

These awards celebrate the outstanding achievements of our peers and acknowledge their tireless efforts to make a positive impact in the government IT community and in public service.

Tracy Barnes received the Golden Gov - a category for a visionary state executive leading state government into a new technology landscape with innovative ideas and inspiring others to get on board.

“I am honored to be recognized by my peers and all who voted for me in this category,” he said. “Again, this award is just another example of the tremendous work we do at the Indiana Office of Technology, and the dedicated team that makes my job easier each day.”

IOT's SEAL program won the State IT Innovation of the Year - a category for a cutting-edge state IT approach to cross-agency or intra-agency technology that embraces innovation.

In 2019, IOT was certified by the Department of Workforce Development as the first agency to use a State Earn & Learn designation to engage new hires in a program of work-based learning.

The SEAL program provides its associates, who come from all walks of life, with practical skills and certifications that will support public-sector IT, while putting Hoosiers to work in a highly needed, highly meaningful area of growing economic value.

“What an honor to be recognized in the StateScoop awards,” Program Director Jon Rogers said. “ Our SEAL IT program demonstrates that a government agency can be innovative in talent development. Our approach is one that others in both the public and private sectors want to follow, and I’m proud that we are giving citizens opportunities to work in highly meaningful, critically needed IT occupations.”

IOT onboarded its first two SEAL associates in March 2020, and both of these individuals successfully converted to IOT staff positions in 2021. IOT currently has twelve SEAL associates serving in six business areas across the agency.

Case Study: Department of Homeland Security & Horse Racing Commission:

dhsIOT Application Development team supports two agencies with projects

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) – Public Safety Portal

In June 2021, the Department of Homeland Security engaged the IOT Application Development team for the analysis, project management, development, testing, and implementation of an application for the DHS Code Enforcement team.

The new process

The end result will be a streamlined process that allows inspectors of entities, goods and equipment under the purview of the DHS Code Enforcement division to record inspection details such as compliance violations and view pertinent historical records.

A value-added feature for inspectors allows for data upload while working remotely, with no wi-fi, to ensure inspectors always have access to the most current data.

Additionally, permit applications submitted via the DHS Public Safety Portal will be processed within the Salesforce application via a link provided on the Access Indiana website.

Horse Racing Commission – Licensing and Breed Portals

Beginning in 2015, as part of an initiative to move all IOT applications off Fox Pro, IOT took the application that was the Horse Racing Commission (HRC) database and migrated it to a .net application and a more modern MSSQL database. After the application was migrated in 2018, a project was established to upgrade the application to better meet HRC’s more modern approach to business.

The updated database

The Indiana Horse Racing Commission engaged the IOT Application Development team for the creation of an online licensing portal to allow users to do a variety of things – including tracking purse awards and other financial data, documenting equine-specific information, and processing license applications online.  It also allows customers/participants to apply for licenses – for track employees, jockeys, owners, trainers, and veterinarians – that are required in the industry.

Read more on both applications here.

If your agency is in need of a new or updated application, please reach out to the Application Development Manager JoAnna Wall at jwall2@iot.in.gov.

GIS1

Jinha Jung, Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering at Purdue University, invited Indiana’s Geographic Information Officer Megan Compton, and GIS Program Director Shaun Scholer, to be guest lecturers in his CE 203 course on Principles and Practice Of Geomatics this past month.

Compton’s presentation focused on Geospatial activities in the Indiana Geographic Information Office. The students gained an understanding of the importance of Geographic Information Systems in everyday life.

Behind the Tech: Taylor Hollenbeck

Taylor

In 2005 the Indiana Office of Technology was created to provide cost-effective, secure, consistent, reliable enterprise-technology services to state government. IOT offers more than 120 technology products supported and serviced by expert staff with licenses or certifications in 62 technical areas. Behind the Tech is a spotlight on the staff that provides services for 30,000 state employees.

Taylor Hollenbeck is the Director of Intergovernmental Affairs at IOT.

Each day is a new challenge, but her average week includes scheduling and traveling to Indiana counties for meetings with local governments. She also works to schedule monthly Indiana Information and Sharing Analysis Center (IN-ISAC) Cybersecurity town halls, where experts join local government officials to discuss topics related to cybersecurity.

She is currently working to implement the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) funding – money provided to state CIO and CISO’s for state and locals’ cybersecurity needs.

What's her favorite thing about her job?

“Meeting new Hoosiers from across the state, breaking down the barrier between the state and local governments, and gaining a better understanding the concerns of local government when it comes to cybersecurity,” she said. “I absolutely love meeting new people every day and hope that I can help connect them to the correct contact or resource for whatever their needs may be.”

What’s something no one knows about her?

She and a few of her family members have auditioned for Family Feud twice, unfortunately to no avail.
