Crazy for pickleball- meet retiree Edith Sloan, Ed. D

Pickleball is a game, just a game.  But, for many, it is a game that provides much-needed excitement and purpose during retirement.Edith Sloan pictured in the front row, fifth from left

Pickleball is a mashup of a game that combines tennis, badminton, and ping pong.  Created by three dads for their bored kids near Seattle during the summer of 1965, the game came together from its creators using whatever they could find on their property: old ping pong paddles, a plastic ball, and a badminton net completed the game, played on an old badminton court.  They called it pickleball, after the family dog.

Then there’s Edith,- a 78-year-old INPRS retiree.

Edith shared with INPRS, “I’ve been trying to live as if I were no older than 60 or 65.  But it seems like I have no sense at times.  I didn’t want to leave [the court]; I stayed to play two more games!”

Pickleball is gaining popularity across age ranges and is a sport the whole family can enjoy. If you find yourself yearning for an activity that gives you both physical fitness and camaraderie, seek out the pickleball classes and teams in your area by visiting the USA Pickleball Association’s website at www.usapickleball.org.
