Traffic Engineering Division
The Traffic Engineering Division is tasked with the administration and design of traffic control devices as well as preliminary engineering of safety and mobility projects for the State of Indiana. Traffic Administration is responsible for many specific duties on behalf of the agency aimed at the primary goal of improving highway safety and operations through correct and consistent use of traffic control devices. Traffic control devices include signs, pavement markings, traffic signals, and work zone devices such as cones, drums, and barricades. The Office also provides stewardship for highway lighting, rumble stripes and other highway safety features.
Traffic Administration works collaboratively with a number of INDOT offices and external partners like the FHWA, other state agencies, industry, contractors, vendors, consultants, and academia in shaping INDOT policy, standard specifications, and programs to achieve this goal. Traffic Administration is composed of 2 senior engineers, a data analyst and an engineering manager.
The primary function of Traffic Design Office is to deliver quality traffic control and lighting projects as efficiently as possible, within the scope, on schedule and on budget. The office is responsible for monitoring the quality of contract documents for consultant designed projects according to state and federal policies and guidelines in a cost effective and efficient manner. The primary goal of the office is to produce a complete set of traffic plans for construction.
Traffic Design works collaboratively within the Traffic Engineering Division on a variety of items in cooperation with District Technical Services, in-house road, bridge design & review teams, contractors, vendors and consultant designers in shaping INDOT design practices to achieve agency goals. Traffic Design is composed of 2 senior engineers, 2 staff engineers and an engineering manager.
The Traffic Safety Office administers safety programs that strive to meet State and Federal safety goals. Traffic Safety works to reduce the frequency and severity of crashes on both the state highway system and local roads through systemic needs identification, crash data review and preliminary engineering.
Traffic Safety provides safety analysis, review and asset management services to District Technical Services, local government and Executive Staff collaborating with FHWA and within the Traffic Engineering Division. The Office is composed of 3 senior engineers, 2 staff engineers, an engineer assistant and an engineering manager.
The Corridor Development Office has the primary goal of evaluating congestion areas to produce cost effective solutions that improve traffic and safety operations on the state highway network. The Office is charged with creation and prioritization of the major expansion program through the use of complex traffic analysis and simulation as well assessment of impacts. Corridor Development coordinates all Interstate Highway System access matters with FHWA related to the FHWA Interstate Access Policy, State of Indiana Interstate Access Request Procedures and Indiana Design Manual Chapter 48 Interchanges.
Corridor Development provides traffic analysis, preliminary engineering and asset management services to internal and external entities such as District Technical Services and Capital Program Divisions, Executive Office, IEDC and a variety of other transportation related interests in the State of Indiana, often collaborating with FHWA and within the Traffic Engineering Division. Corridor Development is composed of two senior engineers, a staff engineer and an engineering manager.
