INDOT > About INDOT > Central Office > Welcome to the Fort Wayne District > US 27/Clinton Street US 27/Clinton Street

This INDOT project is replacing the existing US 27/Clinton Street south bridge over Spy Run Creek, which is located just north of downtown Fort Wayne, in Allen County. The project is replacing the existing three-lane, two-span, continuous reinforced concrete slab bridge, which was built in 1936. The project will raise the bridge structure approximately seven feet above current grade to address serious localized storm water flooding issues. When completed, this project will eliminate the need to sandbag the area in order to keep floodwaters off the US 27/Clinton Street southbound lanes. The project also will include widening the southbound roadway and softening road curves to improve driver safety.

Based upon crash data, the horizontal curvature of US 27 between the intersections of Elizabeth Street and Jacobs Avenue had been a contributing factor to local traffic accidents. Improving the roadway curvature should help to reduce the number and severity of accidents along this section of US 27.

UPDATE: The US27/Clinton Street curve realignment and Spy Run Creek Bridge replacement project is now 90% complete, and the road is open to traffic!  The contractor has been fine grading; sodding and seeding; and working to install the permanent landscape items (trees, bushes and erosion control items), permanent traffic signs and a few extra work items.  The entire project is expected to be finished later this month.

Construction of the $2.1 million project began in March 2012 and will conclude by late October. To accommodate work, Clinton Street has closed from State Boulevard to Elizabeth Street.  Detour information is below.

Throughout the construction period, motorists can check here for status of the project.

Through-Traffic Detour

The official traffic detour for this project is Coliseum Boulevard/SR 930 to Washington Boulevard to US 27.

Local Traffic Detour

For local traffic, US27/Clinton Street will be diverted east to Spy Run Avenue at State Boulevard. Traffic will be directed south to Elizabeth Street on Spy Run Avenue and west on Elizabeth Street to Clinton Street South. During construction, Spy Run Avenue will be maintained as a two-way street for approximately three blocks.
