National Guard Extension Scholarship

Even more assistance for former Guardsmen.

The National Guard Extension Scholarship (NGES) is a limited scholarship that provides 100% of tuition up to one year after separation to former National Guard members who left the Guard under honorable discharge conditions, used the National Guard Supplement Grant in the past, and who served on active duty overseas since September 10, 2001. Students can attend either full time or part time. Former Guardsmen who believe they may qualify for this program can review the application and rules and apply at ScholarTrack.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

  • Not have exhausted four years of eligibility for other tuition assistance programs
  • Have been in good standing upon leaving the National Guard; i.e., honorably discharged
  • Have applied for and used a National Guard Supplemental Grant (NGSG) prior to termination from the National Guard
  • Complete a free application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by March 10 and make any necessary corrections by the May 15 receipt date deadline (will be pro-rated)

Period of Eligibility

  • Applicants have one year from date of termination to turn in the application form and a copy of the Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty (DD 214) and NGB Form 22. (Example: if the discharge date is 2022-12-24,  application must be submitted before 2023-12-24.)
  • Must have deployed and/or had state active duty (SAD) time; for example, Hurricane Katrina or COVID duties.
