Special Use Airspace

Special use airspace or special area of operation is the designation for airspace in which certain activities must be confined, or where limitations may be imposed on aircraft operations that are not part of those activities. Certain special use airspace areas can create limitations on the mixed use of airspace.

After the 5th of the preceding month, all requests are on a first come first served basis.

Range Description

The Atterbury restricted area, R-3401A/B, is located approximately 20 NM south-southeast of Indianapolis, IN. Shared use of the area by both Army and Air National Guard units and other reserve units requires all using units to be aware of existing restrictions. Note: R-3401A (SFC-FL250) is located over approximately 33,000 acres of federally owned land. The Air National Guard has joint use of 650 acres of Atterbury for use as the Air-to-Ground Gunnery Range, while the Army uses the balance of the training area for infantry, artillery, air cavalry and engineering training.

POL Target Scheduling

Based upon the impact of the heavyweight footprints on the Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge activities, the remote POL target requires, at a minimum, a 24 hour notice prior to use. Anticipate restrictions to POL use during the months of May, October, and November for which the USFWS pre-empts military use with public hunting.

Changes to Range Schedule

Units wishing to change or add range times should coordinate such requests as soon as possible through Jefferson Range scheduling to allow coordination with Indy Center/FAA. For changes to a previously scheduled airspace/range times coordination must be accomplished at least 30 minutes prior to the time of use. For additional airspace/range times NOT previously scheduled coordination must be accomplished at least 2 hours and 30 minutes prior to the anticipated time of use.

Airspace

R-3403A covers JPG boundaries from surface to FL430. R-3403B airspace is 1200 AGL to FL180 overlaid by the Ripley ATCAA to FL240 above. Normal operations require airspace to FL240 for R-3403A/B and the Ripley ATCAA. Airspace up to FL430 over R3403A may be available with prior coordination.

There are also four MOAs adjacent to the restricted airspace. The JPG A, B, C MOAs and the C ATCAA are located to the Southwest and the JPG D MOA is located to the north. Normal operations for the JPG B MOA are to 16,000 MSL however FL180 can be requested.
