CAIRNS Grant Application

Eligibility Requirements

Across many continents and cultures dating from pre-history to modern times, man-made piles of stones, or cairns, have been used as memorials, markers for supplies, and guides to help show the way to safe destinations. The INAIAC is committed to supporting organizations which provide assistance to Native American Indian individuals and families during this challenging time.

The global coronavirus pandemic has caused a public health crisis on a scale not seen for a century. For most of 2020, Indiana has worked to flatten the curve and slow the spread of the virus which causes COVID-19, which sadly continues to claim Hoosier lives, and pose serious health risks to our most vulnerable community members. The slowing of economic activity in response to the pandemic have resulted in disruption and difficulty for individuals and communities across the country, and right here at home.

In addition to these challenges, data are showing that disparities which already existed for communities of color are also appearing in COVID-19 infection and death rates. Native American Indians living in Indiana are no exception to the effects of these disparities, with much higher rates of infection and hospitalization compared to percentage of the population. The disruptions in social, health, educational and economic systems have led to an increased need for resources for Native American Indians in several key areas.

Because this need will persist beyond initial efforts to flatten the curve, the Indiana Native American Indian Affairs Commission has developed the Coronavirus American Indian Relief Network Support (CAIRNS) Grant Program. CAIRNS funds will support programs and organizations with a focus on addressing the COVID-19 related needs of Native American Indians in Indiana in four areas:

  • Reduce and prevent food insecurity for Native American Indians due to hardship caused by the pandemic
  • Provide housing assistance for Native American Indians who have been impacted economically by COVID-19 related job or income loss
  • Facilitate access to medical and mental health care for Native American Indians in need of services
  • Support efforts to provide employment-related resources for Native American Indians during this time of reduced economic activity

Awards of up to $2,000.00 will be granted on a quarterly basis beginning in the fourth quarter of the 2020 calendar year. Organizations seeking support for any eligible programs are invited to apply at the link above.
