2016-17 My Community, My Vision Program gets underway
INDIANAPOLIS – The 2016-17 My Community, My Vision (MCMV) program is now underway following a kick-off event last month in Fishers. Local Units of Governments (LUGs), with help from young adults in Greenfield, Greensburg, Crawfordsville and Shelbyville, selected to participate in this year’s program will develop formal and detailed plans with support from the Ball State University’s School of Urban Planning and the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority (IHCDA).
“Through the MCMV program, LUGs selected to participate have the unique opportunity to work alongside youth in their community and with Ball State University and IHCDA on community planning efforts,” said Jacob Sipe, Executive Director of IHCDA. “I can’t wait to see the plans that are developed over the next few months.”
The LUGs along with the youth participating in the program attended a kick-off event facilitated by IHCDA and Ball State University last weekend at the Ball State University – Fishers Center for Academic and Economic Innovation last month. Over the next few months they will develop their plans through regular mentor meetings with groups, a local stakeholder meeting and three additional statewide meetings. In April 2017 the groups will meet a final time for an event in Indianapolis to present their plans.
Established in 2014, the MCMV program is a youth planning partnership between IHCDA and Ball State University. Now in its third year, the program was developed with the belief that young people in Indiana should not have to leave their hometowns in order to achieve their dreams.
Previous participating groups have developed community vision plans that lay the groundwork for student entrepreneurship opportunities, community gardens, bike-share programs farmers markets and other programs students wanted to see brought in their hometowns.
Past youth-driven plans have been adopted by LUGs and one group even raised $4,000 in grant funding and in-kind donations to implement projects developed in the MCMV planning process. Click here for more information about the MCMV program or contact: firstname.lastname@example.org.
