Qualifications for Asbestos Licenses

All applicants for asbestos licenses must meet the education, work experience, and training course requirements for their particular discipline(s).

  • Asbestos inspector:
    • The applicant must attend an IDEM-approved training course, pass the training course provider’s written exam for asbestos inspection, and have a high school degree or equivalent. Two years of experience in one or a combination of the following fields is equivalent to a high school degree: asbestos inspection, building construction, building maintenance, and general building inspection.
  • Asbestos worker:
    • The applicant must attend an IDEM-approved training course and pass the training course provider's written exam for asbestos workers or asbestos project supervisors.
  • Asbestos project supervisor:
    • The applicant must attend an IDEM-approved training course, pass the training course provider’s written exam for asbestos project supervision, and have at least six months of experience as an asbestos worker.
  • Asbestos management planner:
    • The applicant must attend an IDEM-approved training course, pass the training course provider’s written exams for asbestos inspection and asbestos management planning and meet one of the following educational and/or experience requirements:
      • An associate, bachelor's, or graduate degree in architecture, industrial hygiene, engineering, building system design, or a related field of study, or
      • A high school degree or equivalent and one year of experience in any of the following fields:
        • planning, supervision, or cost estimation of building construction;
        • planning, supervision, or cost estimation of asbestos projects;
        • asbestos inspection; or
        • general building inspection.
  • Asbestos project designer:
    • The applicant must attend an IDEM-approved training course, pass the training course provider’s written exams for asbestos project design, and meet one of the following educational and/or experience requirements:
      • An associate, bachelor, or graduate degree in architecture, industrial hygiene, engineering, building system design, or a related field of study, or
      • A high school degree or equivalent and one year of experience in any of the following fields:
        • planning, supervision, or cost estimation of building construction;
        • planning, supervision, or cost estimation of asbestos projects;
        • asbestos inspection; or
        • general building inspection.
  • Asbestos contractor:
    • The designated representative must attend an IDEM-approved training course, pass the training course provider’s written exams for asbestos project supervisor or asbestos removal contractor, and demonstrate the contractor is competent in the field of asbestos project implementation. The contractor must have proof of financial responsibility with a current certificate of asbestos liability insurance documenting at least $500,000 in liability insurance for the implementation of asbestos projects. The insurance company must be recognized or licensed by the State of Indiana to provide asbestos coverage, and the contractor will list the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) as the certificate holder on the insurance policy. The contractor must inform IDEM in writing within five days of any change in financial responsibility status or any changes in designated employee, with proof of the new designated employee’s qualifications.
  • Training provider:
    • The training provider must ensure attendee eligibility for training and meet instruction standards for lectures, field demonstrations, and written exams for all disciplines.
