We're very excited about having 19 a robust Commission. 20 I know we have your support, as you said, 21 Madam Chair, and again, I want to thank those 22 that are new on the Commission and those OG's, as 23 they said, and I take that as being those who 9 1 have the knowledge. That's how I look at that, 2 so that's from my perspective. 3 What I want to do first is introduce the 4 new executive team that we have in the 5 Commission, and first will be the Executive 6 Director, which is -- as I said, the number two 7 person in the organization is Doneisha Posey. 8 Doneisha, do you have a couple of words to 9 say? 10 MS. POSEY: Hello again, 11 Commissioners. I'm Doneisha Posey, the Executive 12 Director and General Counsel here for the 13 Commission, in my new role here at the 14 Commission. I started here almost a year ago, as 15 Administrative Law Judge, and here I am today in 16 Deputy Director -- in the Deputy Director role. 17 So, I just want to say thank you all for 18 your service. Welcome back. If you have any 19 issues, questions, please do not hesitate to 20 contact me. 21 Thank you. 22 MR. WILSON: Then the next person I 23 want to introduce, Madam Chair, is Lesley Gordon. 10 1 She's the Deputy Director of External Affairs. 2 That's outreach, marketing and education. 3 MS. It's been 5 a short time, but in my background with 6 communications and community outreach, I look 7 forward to applying those passions and 8 initiatives to our purpose here, and again, I am 9 open for any -- as a resource for any help that I 10 can provide to you. 11 Thank you. 12 MR. WILSON: And I know that John, 13 which is our Administrative Law Judge, he will 14 have comments later, because he is actually part 15 of the program, but the other person I want to 16 make sure that people know we've brought back, 17 and that is Pam. Pam is our Chief Financial 18 Officer. 19 (Applause.) 20 MR. WILSON: And I just want to say 21 that the work she's done to get our finances back 22 in order over the last year, because she had left 23 for a while, has just been a tremendous effort 11 1 she's put forth to make sure that our budget's 2 balanced, it's actually functioning the way it 3 should. So, again, this is Pam Cook. 4 MS. COOK: Good afternoon, 5 Commissioners. I look forward to working with 6 each of you and will aspire to be a good steward 7 over the agency's finances. 8 MR. WILSON: Well, she already is. 9 She's about no spin, so we like that. Again, I 10 just want to say thank you, Madam Chair, thank 11 you, Commissioners. We look forward to working 12 together. 13 And we don't take our mission lightly. We 14 take our mission very seriously. We take our 15 mission and understand that the public trusts us 16 to do what's right, and that's who we serve is 17 the public. EDWARDS: Okay. My name is 12 Sheryl Edwards. I'm retired. I retired after 37 13 years working for Indiana-Michigan Power, an HR 14 professional there over 25 years. 15 Currently I do a lot of volunteer work in 16 the community. I serve on the Martin Luther King 17 Board, I'm a member of my sorority chapter, Beta 18 Phi Beta Sorority. Eta Epsilon Beta Chapter, I'm 19 the Second Vice-President there. 20 I also serve on the Executive Board of the 21 American Legion because I am a retired military 22 vet as well. I served 20 years active duty and 23 retired reserve regiment. Also, I'm the finance 13 1 officer for the Post 148. 2 I'm a new grandmother. My daughter just 3 had her first child. He's two months old, and I 4 am so proud to be -- 5 CHAIRPERSON BLACKBURN: Wow. 6 COMM. EDWARDS: -- a grandmother 7 again. I also have a 20-year-old son, so there's 8 a big difference there in the ages. But anyway, 9 I look forward to working with everyone on the 10 Commission. 11 COMM. SLASH: I'm Adrianne Slash. I 12 am by day the -- how do I put this? I am the 13 Diversity & Inclusion Consultant for Community 14 Health Network. 15 By night I pretty much wear every 16 community hat they might pass out to me. I'm a 17 board member at the Indianapolis Urban League, a 18 board member at the Jewish Community Center. I 19 also randomly sit on many other things, but all 20 things connected to making sure that everyone in 21 the city and state feels welcome and included, 22 and I'm pretty excited to be here. 23 CHAIRPERSON BLACKBURN: Excellent. 14 1 Comm. Ramos? 2 COMM. RAMOS: Welcome to everyone. 3 We're so delighted to have you here. We have an 4 outstanding cast from a Commissioner's standpoint 5 and I'm looking forward to working with the 6 Commission as a whole. 7 My background is with the IBM Corporation. 8 I'm actually an engineer, systems engineer, by 9 trade, and moved up the pipeline at the IBM 10 Corporation as a global executive going around 11 the world. 12 I retired from Big Blue, became CEO for 13 the largest Hispanic professional society in the 14 United States, and then became the CEO for the 15 largest fraternity in the United States, Tau 16 Kappa Epsilon. Most recently I've become an 17 entrepreneur with one of the largest in the 18 Fishers area, early childhood facilities. 19 I'm very much involved in nonprofit as 20 well, from the Indianapolis Zoo Board to early 21 childhood national programs, and Municipal Board 22 Chair in Indianapolis. So, a lot of things in 23 entrepreneurship, which is fun in many, many 15 1 ways, and again, I'm delighted to be here. 2 COMM. LONG: Hello, everyone. My 3 name is Weilin Long, and I have been living in 4 Indianapolis for 29 year -- actually 20 years, 5 and in the state for 30 years. I'm very honored 6 to have this opportunity, and actually thank you, 7 Director Wilson, who first connected me. I used 8 to work for Director Wilson when -- in the 9 Mayor's Office. 10 I've worked for the state for years as the 11 Newborn Screening Director and Community 12 Nutrition Director, and then worked for Mayor 13 Ballard as the Business Development 14 Administrator, and then the vice-president for 15 the International Center before I joined the 16 state again as the International Foreign Affair 17 Advisor for Lieutenant Sue Ellspermann, so truly 18 enjoyed working for the state and for the city. 19 And I am also a certified minority 20 business owner. I have a consulting firm that I 21 do international and government consulting work. 22 And in addition, I actually spent more than my 23 paid hours for volunteer works, so I serve on 16 1 different advisory committees, including the 2 Salvation Army, the local Asian Journey and other 3 groups that I don't even have name for. 4 So, I'm pretty much as needed and 5 available, and I'm happily married for 30 years 6 with a daughter who is graduating from med school 7 next year. A grad knows all of the stories about 8 how diverse to be a girl in the American way. 9 So, yeah, very, very humbled and very 10 honored, and look forward to learning from all of 11 the members and to learn from all of you the 12 great work that you do. 13 Thank you. 14 CHAIRPERSON BLACKBURN: It's an 15 impressive group we have, and I think a more 16 diverse group than we have ever had as 17 Commissioners for the state. 18 By way of my own background, I am 19 basically a retired artist. Having lived in 20 Indiana for so many years, I call myself a 21 Hoosier now, though I was born and raised in 22 Lynchburg, Virginia. I was never proud of the 23 name, and in light of current news occurrences, 17 1 I'm not especially proud to tell people I'm from 2 Virginia, where we have had such difficulty in 3 dealing with the racial animosity that has 4 exploded on the scenes, endemic of problems that 5 certainly are nationwide, not just local. 6 But I also was, when I moved to Indiana as 7 a young woman, a model, and don't hold that 8 against me or compare it to some photographs or 9 imagery. After that, I became very involved with 10 our family business and retired from the 11 presidency and CEO of Blackburn Architects, who, 12 if you will look at the signage for this 13 building, we were participants in the design of 14 the building where we now are meeting. 15 My interests are broad, but focused 16 primarily on education and the arts and, of 17 course, civil rights. I think that it's hard to 18 fully explore our humanity without feeling safe, 19 without feeling and having an expression for our 20 creativity, and without having enough education 21 to appreciate all that we do experience. 22 So, for the last now 14 years, I have 23 raised money for scholarships to send high school 18 1 graduates to college to study art, architecture, 2 or allied fields of either of those professions. 3 And so, there are a lot of now Blackburn scholars 4 for whom I applaud their diligence and extoll 5 their accomplishments whenever I have an 6 opportunity. 7 So, with that, I want to welcome all of 8 you again, and let's get on with the business of 9 the state. Yes, that 5 happened July the 28th in partnership with the 6 Indianapolis Indians, so we had the Civil Rights 7 Night, and we were happy to welcome young 8 community activist, Mr. -- 9 MS. GORDON: -- Reese Hamilton, yes, 12 eight-year-old Reese Hamilton threw out the first 13 pitch with us, and we had some really great 14 signage and some great opportunities to showcase 15 what we do and some example cases that we see 16 coming through the office, and involved the 17 audience. So, overall, it was a great 18 experience. 19 COMM. RAMOS: Great. Thank you. 20 (Discussion off the record.) 21 MS. GORDON: And in general, the 22 Office of External Affairs partnerships is 23 something we are ready to increase and broaden to 27 1 make sure we're including the entire state as 2 well as some bigger organizations, so we are 3 looking to work with the Pacers and the Fever to 4 do similar partnerships and nights, to increase 5 awareness around the state. 6 COMM. RAMOS: We look forward to 7 seeing more of those kinds of activities in the 8 calendar of events, so that we can participate. 9 It would be most appreciated. 10 MS. Just so 14 you know, one of things we are -- we're 15 running -- we're trying to work on an event 16 calendar for the year. We have not done that 17 before, and that's what we're -- we're happy to 18 have Lesley here to help put together our 19 year-long calendar and build these partnerships 20 around the state so we're not just doing things 21 in Indianapolis. 22 We're not Indianapolis Civil Rights, we're 23 the State Civil Rights, and so, we want our 28 1 office to reflect that we work for the whole 2 state, and those types of partnerships are 3 important. As she said, we're working with the 4 Pacers, we're doing something with the Colts, and 5 we look forward to doing something around the 6 state. 7 If you have other organizations that you 8 think we could partner with, feel free to send it 9 to Leslie. I'm not like everybody else, "send it 10 to me and we'll send it to the experts." If it's 11 for Lesley, send it to her; if it's for Doneisha, 12 send it to her. But we do have a lot of great 13 ideas, again, to be more laser focused on what 14 we're doing and not so much spread across. 15 And then another thing we're going to do 16 is we're going to work closely with our partners 17 around the state, build consortiums, seeing how 18 we can utilize and work with them.
