INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Civil Rights Commission (ICRC) is proud to partner with the Indianapolis Indians to bring Civil Rights Night to Victory Field this Friday, July 29, 2016. The Annual Civil Rights Night celebrates history and the progressive movement of all people towards equal rights in the spirit of America’s pastime. This year marks the fifth consecutive year for this collaboration and features a match-up with the Norfolk Tides.
Prior to the game ICRC Executive Director, Rick Hite, will be on the mound to address the crowd and to throw out the first pitch. Hite will be joined by Shelby Slaughter of Bedford, IN. Shelby was recently announced as the first place winner of ICRC’s annual student essay contest. The second and third place winners will also be recognized at the game.
To honor the civil rights pioneers of the Negro League, the Indianapolis Indians will wear Indianapolis Clowns throwback jerseys during the game Friday. Fans can place bids on these game-worn jerseys throughout the night with the proceeds going to a local little league baseball program.
The game starts at 7:15 p.m. at Victory Field in Indianapolis.
Additional sponsors for the game include: Indianapolis Recorder, La Voz De Indiana, and Indiana Black Expo.
