Census Records

Federal Census

Federal Census Ill.The Indiana State Archives does not have copies of the regular Federal Census, however microfilm copies are held by the Genealogy Division of the Indiana State Library. Indexes are available for most years; contact the Genealogy Division for further information.

U.S Gen Web, Roots Web, and the Genealogical Society of Utah are excellent online sources for locating free census indexes.

A free index to the 1880 Census is available online through Ancestry.com, however they charge a subscription to access census images, which include all census records for the United States.

Special Census

The State Archives does have Special Census schedules available on microfilm in the reading room. These include:

  • The Agricultural Census 1850-1880
  • The Manufacturers Census 1820-1880
  • Social Statistics 1850-1880
  • Census of Defective, Dependent, and Delinquent (3-D Census) 1880

State Census

Although some states did conduct state sponsored enumerations, Indiana did so merely for purposes of legislative apportionment. Information concerning specific families does not exist in any resource at the State Archives.
