Typhoid fever is a bacterial illness caused by the bacterium Salmonella
typhi, which lives only in humans. The disease is transmitted from human to
human via the fecal-oral route. Most reported cases of typhoid fever are
acquired while traveling internationally. Symptoms of typhoid fever may include
fever, stomach pain, headache, constipation or diarrhea, and rose-colored spots
on the trunk.
In 2005, two cases of typhoid fever were reported in Indiana.
Figure 1 shows the number of
reported typhoid fever cases (11) for the five-year period 2001-2005.
