Ehrlichiosis

Human Monocytic Ehrlichiosis (HME) is caused by the bacteria Ehrlichia chaffeensis and is transmitted to humans by the lone star tick, Amblyomma americanum. Human Granulocytic Ehrlichiosis (HGE) is caused by the bacteria Anaplasma phagocytophilum and is transmitted to humans by the deer tick, Ixodes scapularis.

From 2000-2004, 18 cases of ehrlichiosis were reported in Indiana: 16 cases of HME and 2 cases of HGE. There were no reported cases of ehrlichiosis in 2004 in Indiana.
Figure 1 shows the number of reported cases by year for 2000-2004.

All cases of HME occurred in residents of Southwestern Indiana counties, where the lone star tick is most prevalent. All cases for which race was reported were white.
