Hepatitis E

Hepatitis E is a waterborne disease caused by infection with the hepatitis E virus (HEV). HEV is transmitted by the fecal-oral route. Symptoms of hepatitis include jaundice, loss of appetite, enlarged liver, nausea, vomiting, and fever. HEV infection is related to poor sanitation in large areas where fecal contamination of drinking water is common.

There were no reported cases of hepatitis E in Indiana during the five-year period 1998-2002.
