Cases = 0

There were no reported cases of diphtheria in Indiana in 2000. The last reported case of diphtheria in Indiana occurred in 1996, and that was the first reported case since 1970. As with tetanus, diphtheria occurs almost exclusively in unvaccinated or inadequately vaccinated persons. Although disease levels are very low, diphtheria continues to occur in many parts of the world.  Therefore, maintaining high levels of vaccination coverage is necessary to ensure the continued absence of diphtheria in Indiana.
