Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways in the lungs. Proper diagnosis and medication is important in controlling asthma attacks. Prevention will result in fewer trips to the emergency room and physician’s office and in the long term, less cost to the insurance agency .
Be sure your clients are receiving proper medial care. Clients identified with asthma should have a minimum of two physicians’ visits per year to control asthma.
Encourage clients with asthma to receive environmental asthma information. IDEM has created an evidence-based list of Environmental Asthma Triggers and fact sheets for each of them. For a quick-reference, provide IDEM’s Top 10 Ways to Reduce Asthma Triggers at Home. IDEM has also created Computer and Additional Web Resources that can be printed and handed out to interested parties.
Encourage clients with asthma to receive medical asthma information. Indiana physicians and allergists have developed a website, The Indiana Chronic Disease Management Program, with medical information for physicians and patients, information about using the stepwise approach, and patient self-management information which will help properly diagnose asthma and further educate your clients.
