Second Trimester

Good news – most women find the second trimester to be the easiest and most enjoyable part of their pregnancy. However, it’s still important to maintain healthy behaviors — like eating right and exercising — to ensure the rest of the pregnancy goes smoothly.

Get moving. Working out during pregnancy is a great way to stay healthy, stay in shape, release stress, gain energy and prepare for the hard work of labor and delivery. Exercises such as stretching, walking, swimming and prenatal yoga are safe and effective for you and your baby. Always check with your health care provider before starting an exercise program. Keep eating fresh, healthy foods. Your baby needs all the vitamins, minerals and nutrients he or she can get to develop a strong heart, healthy lungs and an active brain. For a little variety, visit a farmers market to try fruits and veggies you might not have had before. For additional healthy eating tips, visit INShape Indiana.

See the doctor routinely. Your doctor will want to see you every few weeks to make sure your baby is growing and developing normally. Regular visits offer you a chance to discuss any worries or concerns you might have. Regular appointments also allow your health care provider to catch any potential problems early to give you and baby the best chance to address them.

Get vaccinated against the flu. Pregnant women are at high risk for severe illness and complications from the flu including premature labor and delivery. Pregnant women can receive a dose of the inactivated (killed) flu vaccine at anytime during the pregnancy. The flu vaccine is recommended for everyone over the age of 6 months, so it’s important that women get the flu vaccine every year, even when they are not pregnant.

Prenatal Care

Having a healthy baby takes planning. Going to early and regular prenatal care visits is critical for you and your baby’s health.
