Take Folic Acid

Folic acid is a B vitamin that allows every cell in your body to grow and develop normally. Folic acid is especially important to women of childbearing age. You can easily find folic acid in your everyday multivitamin pill, and taking it can reduce a baby’s risk for neural tube defects, a birth defect that leaves the spinal cord exposed, and causing serious medical complications.

Folic acid helps to prevent these and other serious birth defects only when taken before pregnancy and in the first few weeks after conception – often before a woman even knows she is pregnant. It is vital that any woman of childbearing age take folic acid, even if she doesn’t plan on becoming pregnant.
