Vacancy Notice
We are recruiting new members to serve on the Council.
Developmental Disability Councils are critical for ensuring the purpose of the Developmental Disabilities Act is realized. To make this possible, people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their family members who want to contribute their voices, gifts, and time are encouraged to apply for membership.
Council Purpose
The Governor's Council for People with Disabilities serves to help the State of Indiana in implementing the Developmental Disabilities Act by developing and implementing the State Plan to engage in advocacy, capacity building, and systems change activities. The Council is consumer and family driven, meaning people with developmental disabilities and family members of people with developmental disabilities play a central role in shaping how community services, individualized supports and other assistance helps people with disabilities exercise self-determination, independence, productivity, and be included in all aspects of community life.
Membership Overview
Membership is established through the DD Act of 2000 and Indiana Code 4-23-29-8. Council members are appointed by the Governor of Indiana to serve a three year term. Members can be reappointed for a second three-year term but cannot serve more than two consecutive terms. Additional member information is collected in the application process to meet membership requirements of the Council.
Specific criteria for member representation:
- Person with a Developmental Disability
- Parent, Immediate Relative, or Guardian of a Person with a Developmental Disability
Meeting Information
The Council meetings are held the second Tuesday of December, March, June, and September from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM (Eastern), in-person with a virtual meeting option. Additional meetings are scheduled as needed and Council members are asked to serve on at least one working committee.
Support for Participation
Appointed Council Members are provided with reimbursement for travel expenses, including mileage, respite/childcare costs, food per diem, overnight accommodations as needed, and a minimum salary per diem provided by IC 4-10-11-2.1 (b). Additionally, staff will provide accommodations to support members' duties as provided in the state policies and procedures.
Selection Process
After applying to serve on the Council, potential new members will be interviewed by the Council's Leadership Committee and submitted to the Governor's Office to be appointed. Applicants who are not appointed are invited to serve on Council Committees as Community Resource Members and to stay actively engaged in Council activities should a vacancy become open. Previous applicants do not need to apply a second time.
