Indiana Recovery Council

What is the Indiana Recovery Council?
The Indiana Recovery Council is comprised of 16 individuals that support the goal of a recovery-oriented, person-centered service delivery system in Indiana.

What does the Indiana Recovery Council do?
Established in 2004, the IRC acts in an advisory capacity to the DMHA and the DMHA Mental Health & Addiction Planning & Advisory Council (to matters pertaining to Indiana residents affected by mental health and addiction issues).

Recovery Council accomplishments

  • 2021 - Feedback loop and annual standardized consumer survey created based off SAMHSA's dimensions of recovery.
  • 2020 - Statewide mental health and addiction recovery survey

  • 2010 – The division awarded the council a $50,000 grant to implement a billboard public awareness campaign in central Indiana with the message that “Mental health . . . not mental illness is possible.” Click the following link to view the billboards:
  • 2007 – “Stigma & Discrimination in Mental Health & Addiction” white paper written.
  • 2005 – “Recovery in Mental Health” white paper written to promote recovery language in public mental health system.

Responsibilities of Recovery Council members

  • Participate in one 90-120 minute meeting every month in Indianapolis (mileage expenses will be paid for those traveling outside Indianapolis)
  • Participate in workgroups outside of regular meetings (as needed)
  • Solicit input from the community to evaluate current services and determine education and service needs
  • To advise the Office of Consumer and Family Affairs in the development of plans to involve mental health and addiction consumers and their families in division activities
  • To advocate innovation and a recovery orientation in mental health and addiction treatment
  • To promote collaboration and information exchange among stakeholder organizations
  • To serve as a forum for public input and the participation in the public policy development of the division
  • Design and recommend ways to reduce stigma in the community and within mental health programs
