Gov. Braun Welcomes COABE to Indiana for the First Time as State Hosts National Gathering

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Indiana Governor Mike Braun this week welcomed adult education professionals from across the country to the state for the Coalition on Adult Basic Education (COABE) 2026 National Conference, highlighting the state’s commitment to expanding opportunity through adult education and workforce development.

This is the first time the national conference has ever been hosted in the state of Indiana, bringing an estimated 2,500–3,000 professionals together from across the country for workforce development and adult education networking and programming.

“Adult Education changes lives,” said Gov. Braun. “It provides a second chance, a new start, and a path to better jobs, stronger families, and greater independence. We are proud to welcome leaders who are making a difference every day.”

COABE, the nation’s largest Adult Education association, represents more than 100,000 members across 2,384 local programs serving millions of learners annually. These programs provide foundational and workforce-focused services, including reading, writing, math, High School Equivalency (HSE) preparation, digital literacy, and workforce readiness training.

Hosting the conference in Indiana brings national attention to the state’s workforce development efforts and provides opportunities for Indiana educators and workforce leaders to connect with national peers and best practices.

Lara Pastore, State Adult Education Director of the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, delivered a general session keynote welcoming the attendees to Indiana.

Lori Chavez-DeRemer, U.S. Secretary of Labor, was also among the featured speakers, reinforcing the national importance of workforce development and adult learning.

“Here in Indiana, we believe workforce development starts with opportunity,” said Mike Smith, Interim Commissioner of the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. “We are proud to support Adult Education efforts that help more Hoosiers gain the skills and confidence they need to succeed.”

The conference highlights Indiana’s commitment to aligning education and training with employer needs and strengthening the nation’s workforce.
