Hoosier Uplands Economic Development Corporation, in cooperation with the AgrAbility Project at Purdue University, manage the Indiana AgVets Career Certification and Internship Program for military veterans. The program is supported by the United States Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) Grant Number 2019-77028-29971. The primary goals of the Indiana AgVets project are to equip veterans with the skills and knowledge necessary to be successful in agricultural-related careers, while developing a potentially new source of much-needed talent for farms and agribusinesses. Open to military veterans from Indiana and surrounding states, the program will involve intensive, personalized instruction in agricultural topics suited to the veterans’ personal interests, coupled with hands-on internships at production or agribusiness host sites. Recognizing that our veterans’ service may have left them with physical impairments or emotional scars, Hoosier Uplands’ and AgrAbility staff will provide disability support and peer mentoring services to help overcome these potential barriers.
