Requesting an Extension of Time to File via INTIME

This year’s due date to file your 2021 Indiana Individual income tax return is April 18, 2022, but what if the chances that you can get it done by that time are slim to none?

You do have the option to request an extension of time to file an Individual income tax return prior to the April 18 deadline. Doing so extends the due date to Nov. 14, 2022. Filing for an extension does not extend the deadline for paying any tax due. Interest is due on all amounts paid after the original return filing due date. You can avoid paying a penalty if you pay 90% of the amount due by April 18 and the remainder by Nov. 14.

There are three ways to request an extension:

  • If you are granted a federal extension of time to file, you automatically have an extension of time to file with Indiana.  Note: If you expect to have a balance due, you will still need to file an extension with Indiana to remit at least 90% of the amount due by April 18 to avoid penalty.
  • You can request an extension of time to file directly with DOR quickly and easily online via INTIME at intime.dor.in.gov prior to the April 18, 2022, deadline.
  • You can also mail a completed Form IT-9, Application for Extension of Time to File, postmarked no later than April 18, 2022.

The easy way to request an extension of time to file is online via DOR’s e-services portal, INTIME. You can even make the request without logging in to your INTIME account by following these simple steps:

STEP 1: Go to intime.dor.in.gov. Locate the “Individual extension” panel and click on “Request extension.”

STEP 2: Provide the required information for the primary taxpayer and include spouse information (if applicable). On the following page you will be asked to provide required address information for the primary taxpayer. Click on “Next” and continue to follow the prompts.

STEP 3: When you are ready to make an extension payment, select the “Yes” button and choose an option of how you will enter the payment.

If you do not expect to owe any state tax but still want to request additional time to file, select the “No” button. On the next page you’ll be asked to enter your email address and then select “Submit”.

If the amount of the extension payment is unknown, select “Yes” and then the “I do not know my extension payment” option and a worksheet will be provided. It looks like this:

Provide the payment allocation information along with primary county and county tax (and spouse’s county, if applicable) and select a payment method – bank account or credit/debit card.

STEP 4: Follow the prompts to enter payment information for either bank account or credit/debit card. Once that has been completed, a confirmation of payment will be displayed.

NOTE: There is no fee for making a payment from a bank account. Processing fee(s) will be assessed for a credit or debit card payment.

STEP 5: Once your payment has been submitted, a confirmation message will be displayed and sent to the email that you provided. A “Printable View” option is available to save or print a copy for your records.

Now you’ll have until Nov. 14, 2022, to file your Indiana individual income tax return.

But don’t wait too long… remember that while the penalty will be waived if you pay 90% of the tax due by April 18 and the remaining balance due by Nov. 14, you’ll still have to pay interest on any payment amount made after April 18, 2022.

More information on filing an extension request is available at DOR’s Extension of Time to File webpage. If you need more information on using INTIME, user guides are available on the INTIME Tax Center webpage.
