DOR Service Options for Non-English Speakers

March 31, 2021

DOR wants to make sure all customers receive helpful tax information. Did you know, according to US census data, 8.4% of Indiana residents speak a language other than English in their home? The American Immigration Council says, in 2018, immigrant-led households paid $1 billion in Indiana state and local taxes. That’s why DOR offers options for customers who may be more comfortable using another language.

Google TranslateOur online Google Translate feature allows customers to read any DOR webpage in one of over 108 languages. Just scroll to the bottom of any DOR webpage and click on the dropdown arrow to select the language you need, and Google will translate the page automatically in a matter of seconds.

Spanish-speaking customers can download the 2020 Form IT-40 Income Tax Instruction Booklet and tax forms, 2020 Indiana El formulario IT-40 del residente individual con Forma y Anexos, on DOR’s Individual Income Tax Forms webpage.

Also, DOR has several customer service representatives who speak Spanish. To get help in Spanish, businesses can use the INTIME messaging center. Individuals can email DOR at individualtaxassistance@dor.in.gov or call 317-232-2240, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. EST, and follow the prompts.

The IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs offer free tax help for taxpayers who qualify. Some locations help in languages other than English. You can find a list of sites and languages spoken on the IRS webpage. Contact the VITA or TCE site directly for more information.

Remember, the individual income tax filing and payment deadline has been extended to May 17, 2021. To avoid paying penalties, customers should pay 90% of any taxes owed by this date. Estimated payments deadlines remain the same.
