INfreefile to Offer Free Tax Services

(Indianapolis) Nearly one million Hoosier taxpayers will benefit from a new relationship between the Indiana Department of Revenue and the Free File Alliance this tax season.

Beginning in January 2012 Indiana will offer no cost, online tax filing services to those who qualify through the new Indiana freefile program. Indiana freefile brings free professional tax services from four major online tax preparers to many Indiana taxpayers from centralized Department of Revenue and IRS websites.

The program is an IRS initiative launched in 2003 with the tax software developer members of the Free File Alliance, a group of online tax application vendors. This year Indiana will participate for the first time.

The online services that will support Indiana tax returns for 2011 are:

  • H&R Block
  • Online Tax (OLT)
  • TaxHawk
  • TurboTax (Intuit)

“Indiana freefile is a big step forward for Indiana taxpayers, both in terms of ease of use and convenience. Qualifying users can now file both their federal and state taxes at the same location using very sophisticated professional software. Plus, it’s free. That’s pretty hard to beat,” said Department of Revenue Commissioner John Eckart.

To qualify for the free online tax services, a taxpayer only has to meet the requirements set by one of the four service providers. Each of the tax preparation services participating in Indiana freefile set their criteria for providing free services. In general, however, Hoosier taxpayers with an Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) of less than $57,000 will find a service available to them.

This new service replaces I-File, the Indiana Department of Revenue sponsored service first offered in 1999.
