Before driving on Indiana roads, you must make sure you are legally driving with the correct required equipment. You must also be sure to spot-check your equipment before each trip.
So, when you’re getting ready to leave on a trip, be sure to spot-check that the following pieces of equipment are functioning correctly:
- Service brakes, including trailer-brake connections
- Parking brake
- Steering mechanism
- Lighting devices and reflectors
- Windshield wipers
- Rear-vision mirror(s)
- Coupling devices
- Wheels and rims
- Emergency equipment
In addition to spot-checking before each trip, be sure to always have the following special equipment in your vehicle at all times:
- A fire extinguisher;
- Spare fuses; and
- Warning devices for stopped vehicles or three bidirectional emergency reflective triangles.
