State Extends Filing Deadline till Sunday Midnight for I-File Users

Unsuccessful ePay payments attempted on April 15
not subject to penalty, interest

(INDIANAPOLIS – April 16, 2009) – In light of the high traffic and technology difficulties that hindered Hoosier online filers yesterday, the Indiana Department of Revenue has extended the filing deadline specifically for I-File users until midnight April 19.

"Many Hoosiers were attempting to file their taxes on time yesterday and use the program we've encouraged them to use," said Revenue Commissioner John Eckart. "We've worked diligently over the past three years to make I-File a great tool, and we regret this situation occurred. We hope this extension will restore taxpayer faith in our filing system and give them the leeway they need to accomplish what they couldn't accomplish yesterday."

The system was upgraded earlier in the year to accommodate 30,000 I-File users per hour. However, due to an unforeseen technology glitch by the Department’s service provider, I-File was slowed to about 500 online filers per hour.

In 2009 more than 145,000 Hoosiers used I-File as of the close of normal business hours yesterday, compared with more than 108,000 users for the same time period last year.

ePay users given leeway, too
The state's revenue agency also will hold the penalty and interest for any taxpayers who attempted to pay through ePay yesterday and were unsuccessful.

"These people were trying to ensure they met their civil obligation and pay their taxes on time," Eckart said. "Therefore, they should not be penalized for a slow-down in our system."

More than 10,000 taxpayers used the ePay online tool yesterday. The state's ePay system was able to process more than 40 percent of those payments.

The Department will be contacting those taxpayers who were unsuccessful in using ePay to inform them of how to make their payments.

Taxpayers who have questions or concerns regarding their online payments should contact the Indiana Department of Revenue at (317) 232-2240 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
