Top 10 Tax-Filing Errors to Avoid

INDIANAPOLIS (April 9, 2007) – Just nine days remain to file Indiana individual income taxes. To help taxpayers reduce filing errors during the final push to the April 17 deadline, the Department of Revenue has identified the top 10 tax-filing errors found on Indiana tax returns.

Top 10 tax-filing errors:

  1. Failing to file - not filing a tax return by the filing deadline.
  2. Failing to pay taxes due - filing but not paying by the payment due date.
  3. Entering incorrect math calculations on the form
  4. Submitting an incomplete return - missing information.
  5. Sending filing without W-2s, 1099s, etc. - required to verify withholding tax.
  6. Filing the wrong tax form - using a form that does not support residency, income or deductions claimed.
  7. Exceeding deduction or credit amounts - claiming a larger amount than allowed.
  8. Entering incorrect information on the tax form - transposing numbers from schedules to forms.
  9. Missing schedules or worksheets - filing a tax return without documents to confirm deductions and credits.
  10. Filing on an outdated tax form - using a form dated for a previous tax year.

“Electronic filing can help to greatly reduce most of these errors,” said Indiana Department of Revenue Commissioner John Eckart. “Many tax practitioners already electronically file their clients’ returns, but online services like I-File are ideal for people that prepare their own.”

I-File is the state’s free electronic filing program that uses a question-and-answer format to choose the correct tax form and retrieve previous filing information from the state’s computer system. It also does the math, calculates local taxes, and checks for missing information before it is officially submitted.

Taxpayers can file and pay their state income taxes up to 11:30 p.m. on April 17 through I-File. For more information about I-File, visit
