Stu and his wife spent the night at Abe Martin Lodge at Brown County State Park. They woke before sunrise to set up this shot near a picnic table at this vista on the park’s main road, then waited for the right light.
Pileated woodpeckers frequent the woods that Don and Aloha Gest own near their home in Kosciusko County, where Don took this shot. The couple also sees the birds in oak trees near their cottage on Lake Webster. The birds’ hammering or loud chicken-like calls often wake them in both places.
