While deer hunting and carrying his Nikon Cool Pix pocket camera, James walked through a ravine and saw what he calls "life on a log" at eye level. The mushroom is a species of puffball. The green plant with a rosette of leaves is a species of rockcress.
One of the many stars shown is the venerable Hickory Ridge fire tower near Monroe Lake, which offers a 360-degree open view. Taken after midnight in early November last year with a Nikon D750 with a Tokina 11–20mm F2.8 lens, the image consists of 40 shots taken to depict a star trail.
