Role Overview:

Full-Time Custodian
The Harrison County Maintenance Department is seeking a full-time custodian. The position will be responsible for janitorial and cleaning duties in the assigned area. To perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed in this document are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required. Requirements for Success:

DUTIES:

Cleans and maintains floors, including dusting and wet mopping, stripping, preparing and waxing floors, and vacuuming/cleaning carpets.

Cleans all assigned areas, such as offices, meeting rooms, hallways, stairwells, entrances, elevators, and break areas, including but not limited to, dusting, polishing furniture, walls, doors, benches, and woodwork, cleaning floor mats, washing blinds, window seals, and cleaning stainless steel.

Cleans and disinfects assigned restroom facilities, including, but not limited to, urinals, toilets and sinks, checking and refilling paper products and soap dispensers, washing walls and mirrors, sweeping and mopping floors, and emptying trash cans.,

Empties trash cans daily, including carrying trash to pick-up site, inserting clean liners, and periodically cleaning trash cans as needed.

Notifies appropriate personnel concerning major repairs or additions to building operating systems.

Operates various hand and/or power tools in the performance of duties, including, but not limited to, mop, broom, chariot, floor buffer, and vacuum cleaner.

Performs office closing procedures, including locking doors and turning off lights.

Periodically moves office furniture to maintain floors or as requested.

Maintains inventory of cleaning supplies, ordering supplies as needed.

Performs all related duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

High school diploma or GED preferred.

Must be at least 18 years of age.

Ability to meet all hiring department requirements, including passing a drug screening.

Working knowledge of and ability to make practical application of basic janitorial and sanitation requirements for assigned areas of responsibility.

Working knowledge of applicable safety practices and procedures with the ability to take proper precautions and ensure the safety of oneself and others.

Ability to operate various hand and/or power tools in performance of duties, including hammer, screw drivers, mop, broom, and steam cleaner.

Ability to physically perform the essential duties of the position, including exerting sustained physical effort, bending, stooping, crouching/kneelings, stretching/reaching, pushing/pulling, handling/grasping objects, prolonged standing/walking, climbing ladders, and lifting/carrying objects weighing less than fifty (50) pounds.

Ability to provide public access to or maintain confidentiality of Department information and records according to state requirements.

Ability to comply with all employer and Department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.

Ability to work alone with minimum supervision and with others in a team environment.

Ability to work on several tasks at the same time and work rapidly for long periods, occasionally under time pressure.

Ability to understand, memorize, retain, and carry out written and oral instructions, work orders, and product application directions, such as cleaning solution.

Ability to read and interpret detailed prints, sketches, layouts, and specifications.

Ability to apply knowledge of people and/or locations, and plan and layout assigned work projects.

Ability to occasionally work extended hours, weekends, and/or evenings.

Possession of a valid Indiana driver's license and a demonstrated safe driving record.

DIFFICULTY OF WORK:

Incumbent applies simple, repetitive tasks according to the supervisor, with work priorities primarily determined by the service needs of assigned facilities. Assignments are set jointly by the incumbent and the immediate supervisor by following standard operating procedures or policy and procedural manuals with minimum care.

PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS:

Incumbent maintains frequent contact with co-workers, other County departments, County Council and Commissioners, attorneys, elected officials, public agencies, State and Federal agencies, and the public for purposes of exchanging information.

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The incumbent is still required to prevent damage to tools and equipment. Incumbent's duties involve bending, stooping, crouching/kneeling, stretching/reaching, pushing/pulling, handling/grasping objects, prolonged standing/walking, climbing ladders, and lifting/carrying objects weighing less than 50 pounds. Incumbent performs duties in an office building, with exposure to potentially hazardous cleaning materials, fumes, odors, dust, and dirt. Incumbent periodically works on high ladders and in wet/icy surroundings. Incumbent must wear protective clothing, such as latex gloves, and safety precautions must be followed at all times to avoid injury to self and others, or equipment. Incumbent occasionally works extended hours, evenings and weekends.
